Jeffrey's Post

The relationship between the various ethnic groups in the Northern Region has not been continuously stable. In particular, conflicts have been smoldering for a long time between the Dagomba on the one hand and the 'nomadic Konkomba on the other. In the eyes of many among the dominating Dagomba, the Konkomba are landless intruders and bandits, who penetrated into the areas of the Dagomba only in the colonial ages. However, this view of the origins and history of the Konkomba in this region of Ghana is not shared by themselves, and it is not supported by the scientific research on this area, especially not by any academic writing on the Konkomba or Dagomba published before the 1994 conflict. 1994 experienced the worst ethnic conflicts ever in Ghana. The conflict spread to other groups, and ended up with several thousand dead. However, due to the continuous conflict many people have migrated from the region. Besides, there has been a tremendous killing in the region. From the population of 1,820,806 in the region shown in the 2000 census, it has now decreased by about 30%. Even though we have made the World Cup, I don't see much of this ethnic conflict ending. Most of it has to do with land and us being in the World Cup can't change who has priority over land. It's sad to see all of this conflict, but maybe if we win the World Cup, some of the conflict can end and we will be more united as a country.

  1. Wow, it seems like Ghana would be such a peaceful country like displayed in our video notes, but I had no clue that Ghana had that much conflict. All countries have ethnic conflict, but Ghana seems to have it bad.
